Thirty years ago, Winston Faircloth asked me to join the Resource Development team at Metro United Way in Louisville, KY. I was blessed to learn from Winston and other team members the best practices in donor development. I remained there for the next sixteen campaigns, assuming various roles and ultimately serving as the campaign director. One of my specialties in the realm of donor development was focused on training our volunteer army to be more effective United Way ambassadors.  This includes campaign cabinet leaders, loaned executives, employee coordinators and agency representatives. The window on the world Metro United Way showed me ignited my passion – serving others. I was proud to be part of a team that raised over $200 million during my time at Metro United Way, allowing us to fund 100 agency partners to make a difference in the lives of one out of three Louisvillians. After leaving Metro United Way in 2001, I worked for a local non-profit, The Cabbage Patch.  I have also consulted with our local American Red Cross chapter and other non-profits, specializing in training them on best practices in fundraising, board member training and board development. In the fall of 2015, Winston reached out to me and shared his vision for Winsightz. I find in Winston an intelligent, generous, creative leader. By Logan McCulloch Why Winsightz?  Here are a few of my personal reasons for joining my friend and colleague Winston Faircloth in his latest endeavor.  I first met Winston when I was an executive in the banking industry and served as a Loaned Executive (LE) on my hometown United Way campaign in 1987.  Winston was the VP of Resource Development for Metro United Way in Louisville, Kentucky.  That was the same year I met my friend and fellow Winsightz consultant Mindy Hedley (she led the LE training program).  I continued as an active volunteer for several years and in 1992 I changed careers and began work as a fundraising executive for Metro United Way.  By this time Winston had become the CEO of the United Way in Lexington, Kentucky.   My first opportunity to actively collaborate with Winston came when he founded and organized a Kentucky CAN-DO (Campaign Analysis Now – Developing Objectives) consulting team.  We were trained and certified as facilitators in this data-driven, trend analysis based strategic planning system.  Later we would team up and lead CAN-DO’s for our sister United Ways in and around Kentucky and Winston would join a national team which helped develop this tool for the rest of the United Way field.  This was my first experience witnessing the depth of Winston’s skills, insights and strategic talents in action.  I have been a huge fan of the CAN-DO concept, tools and methods ever since. An Unexpected Detour, Happy 1st Anniversary

What if ALL of our life’s experiences had prepared us perfectly for our next season of work?   That question propelled me a year ago as I launched Winsightz on August 15, 2015.  Deep in my soul, I just knew that it was time for a new chapter in my life after over 15 years as the founding team member at Upic Solutions.  The cause I had devoted my entire career to was struggling to maintain relevancy in the midst of losing almost 40 percent of their donor base over the previous eight years.  And I felt like now was the time to pursue my dream of building a team which would bring a diverse set of life experiences in service to a select group of clients. The launch of Winsightz was the culmination of months of preparation.  I had built a business plan with multiple income streams.  Our new website was ready and I had begun nurturing potential clients with a series of touchpoints.  I had recently secured relationships with business partners addressing a specific need within the United Way fundraising model.  Finally, I co-located in one of Cincinnati’s best business incubators and began absorbing as much information as I could about growing a new business.  Classic business startup 101. The next several months were a blur of activity.  We launched WinBack, a software as a service beta program, designed to help six United Ways identify and overcome their donor retention challenges.  Via LinkedIn, I joined forces with two of my former coworkers to craft SPOT-On, an inspiring update of the old CAN-DO model from the 1990’s.  And...

April Fools? No, these United Way trends are true.

April 1 is known as a day to be skeptical of news releases and bold claims. I love April Fools pranks as much as anyone else. You can follow some of the best today here on Twitter. How I wish these United Way giving trends were merely an April Fool’s joke! As a former VP & CEO of three different United Ways, I always viewed our annual fundraising as a barometer of our engagement and resonance with the needs of the local community. If that’s true, then this should be our wakeup call. Since 2004, individual donors have declined from over 13.50 to 8.35 million–a decrease of over 5 million individuals. Over 50% of the United Ways in USA reported a decline in contributions in 2014. Workplace campaigns still comprise over 96% of all donors and 75% of all United Way revenue. Tocqueville and Mega Gifts are among the primary bright spots, representing over 20% growth since 2004. However, leadership gifts are down nearly 1% over the decade, while all individual gifts are down nearly 10%. Top two reasons people do not support United Way: 1) lack of personal connection to & 2) lack of knowledge about United Ways.
